United Nations Headquarters New York City

Quince Imaging partners with 59 Productions to deliver an unforgettable architectural projection mapping experience at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City for the lead-up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup “Scoring for the Goals” Campaign.

An Unforgettable Projection Mapping Experience

To celebrate the countdown to the 2022 FIFA World Cup being held in Qatar beginning November 20, 2022, the Government of the State of Qatar, in collaboration with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy and Education Above All, hosted “Scoring for the Goals” at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York City on September 17, 2022.

The landmark launch captivated guests with compelling images in a video projected onto the General Assembly and Secretariat buildings and the General Assembly Terrace of the iconic UN Building. Over 200 guests attended the international event that kicked off UN General Assembly Week. Guests included the UN Secretary-General, high-level dignitaries from the 31 World Cup qualifying teams, and officials from Qatar.

59 Productions and The Mission of Qatar hired Quince Imaging as their image engineering experts to design and build the projection mapping system and make their vision come to life in front of the world. The project included architectural projection mapping onto all three surfaces of the UN building and managing the audio, video, and lighting needs of the VIP event held on the General Assembly Terrace.

In addition to being an international event, “Scoring for the Goals” was launched as part of the Education Summit at General Assembly Week –  the most important week of the year at the UN. Having the eyes of the world on this unique projection mapping project provided the perfect opportunity for Quince Imaging to showcase its talent for providing high-quality technical image production for live events.

LEVERAGING THE LATEST TECHNOLOGIES

Quince Imaging began the setup on Monday, September 13, with the show and strike taking place on Saturday, September 17. The technology included 26 Panasonic RQ 35K projectors, four Disguise Pro vx-4 media servers, two Sony HDC 3100, and two Panasonic UEI150 4K PTZ cameras. Quince Imaging worked alongside 59 Productions, Starlite, and York Scaffolding to execute the project that included more than 80 crew members.

The stars of the event were the stunning image projections on three buildings of the UN Headquarters. This included a 510-foot x 78-foot image on the Secretariat building, a 55-foot x 280-foot image on the curved east façade of the General Assembly building, and an 18-foot x 32-foot image on the VIP terrace of the General Assembly building. Scaffolding and weatherproofing were also required to support the projections, servers, and playback. Executing the VIP event required audio, lighting, and staging support, along with two staffed and two robotic cameras.

The installation took place throughout the week, beginning Tuesday with the building of several platforms of assorted sizes to support the sound, lighting, and projection systems. The towers were weatherproofed, and power and cabling were provided to all spaces.

On Wednesday, 26 projectors were loaded and placed on custom-designed platforms. The Media servers were also installed, and a playback tent was built along with client review stations. Also, on Wednesday, the projectionists began the initial set-up and projection alignment while the media server team fine-tuned the details to ensure a perfect display.

Fine-tuning continued Thursday, and audio and lighting were loaded into the Terrace on Friday. To ensure a flawless performance, another round of fine-tuning took place before rehearsals began at midnight. Final run-throughs and client approvals were secured on the event day. The dazzling show occurred from 7:15 to 9:00 p.m., striking equipment immediately after the event with a full crew arriving at 10 p.m. and concluding at 2 a.m.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

“Scoring for the Goals” was an ambitious project executed on a tight timeline, bringing several challenges to the team. With New York Fashion Week underway and other local events taking place simultaneously, securing support elements like scaffolding was a challenge our team overcame to ensure the event was a success.

Tight security provided an additional challenge. With the event happening at the UN Building and with General Assembly Week immediately following the event, Quince Imaging had to comply with strict UN security rules for vehicles and onsite staff. The short turnaround time provided further challenges when obtaining access to the site for each crew. Working within security protocols was no small feat and required everyone’s immediate attention to ensure there were no issues in completing the project on time.

IMPRESSIVE RESULTS

Despite these challenges, Quince Imaging executed a flawless production from start to finish, creating a stunning show for the world to enjoy. It was an honor for us to produce this event at a historic venue with significance on the world stage. The international scope of this project was unique, with different team members located internationally. The group seamlessly worked within their time zones, languages, and individual needs to exceed the client’s vision for the project.

The UN building, while iconic, is also a massive structure measuring 550-feet x 78-feet. The team covered that and a giant 55-foot x 280-foot curved wall, in addition to a more standard flat wall on the terrace with only four days to set up (three days for projection and media servers).

A large part of the production’s success was the trust that was quickly established among all vendors. 59 Productions had to trust the abilities of Quince Imaging since there was no time in the schedule for errors. In turn, Quince Imaging entrusted York Scaffolding and Starlite as supportive partners. Everyone did their part to perfection, allowing the event to be a big success.

Not only were the direct clients satisfied, but through the relationships gained with the UN facilities and events team, several other national delegations were also impressed with the stunning display and requested information from our team about the technology.
